Assignment Sheet: Classroom-Library Collaborative Lesson Plan Deconstruction

 Lesson Plan Deconstruction – A.3.2

This is a partner project. You will identify a different partner with whom to work on this assignment. Choose someone who is working or aspires to work at a similar instructional level. Your team will continue to work together on the collaborative lesson plan assignment, A.4.2, in Module 4 as well. One goal of these assignments is to increase your knowledge of instructional design. As you deconstruct a sample classroom-library collaborative lesson from CRCSESL or CRCSSSL, you will learn/review the required components for the lesson plan assignment for this course. You will apply these components when you create your A.4.2 Classroom-Library Collaborative Lesson Plan.

Overarching Outcomes for All Assignments in LS5443: Librarians as Instructional Partners

Collaboration: Standard 1 (1) Participate as an educational leader, an equal partner, and a change agent in the curriculum development process at both the campus and district levels.

Communication: Standard 5 (3) Implement strategies for effective internal and external communications.

Competence: Standard 6 (2) Understand the role of the school library media program as a central element in the intellectual life of the school.

A.3.2 – Lesson Plan Deconstruction

Standard 1 (3) Model and promote collaborative planning, cooperative teaching, and direct instruction as determined by learners' needs and state curriculum standards.

In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to make connections with many concepts that have been taught and reinforced in this course, including reading comprehension strategies instruction, Understanding by Design, research-based instructional strategies, instructional objectives, resources, coteaching strategies, assessment, content-area and AASL standards, and more.

This assignment will also give you the opportunity to use a wiki for collaboration, an electronic mind-mapping or brainstorming tool as a prewriting/thinking tool, a graphic organizer, and a checklist for assessment. These will be joint work. You will also submit an individual reflection.

Module 3.1:

Begin this assignment by:

  • Identifying and establishing communication with a partner in O.D.3.1a.
  • Determining whose wiki you will use for your collaboration and post your partner’s name and the URL for your wiki on the BBW Project Partnerships page in the designated table cell.
  • Creating a wiki space for this project and determining a mind-mapping/brainstorming tool. See the sample wiki navigation at:  http://ls5443samplewiki.wikispaces.com/LP_Deconstruct
  • Reading through the lessons in CRCSESL or CRCSSSL at your instructional level of interest.
  • Negotiate with your partner and select a lesson for deconstruction. Note: If you are using CRCSESL, you may not choose the Advancing Main Ideas lesson on pages 115-119.
  • Review the checklist: Rubric A.3.2.
  • Use your mind-mapping/brainstorming tool to begin your discussion of the reading comprehension strategy (RCS), the lesson plan and its component parts such as alignment of RCS and S4L, graphic organizers, and the like. Each team member must indicate her/his individual contributions in some way (color/name/initials…) See the A.3.2 Rubric. You can find some possible tools under "Mind Mapping" at: http://ls5443.wikispaces.com/Web_2.0 (See the mind map former G.A. Liz and I created for the course using Mind42 at: http://ls5443.wikispaces.com/5443+Course+Map)

Module 3.2:

  • Copy and paste the Graphic Organizer -G.O.3.2 - Lesson Plan Deconstruction - onto a wiki page. (This graphic organizer is for lessons from either book. Simply eliminate the information that does not apply to your instructional or grade level. Thank you.)
  • See the sample student wiki lesson plan deconstruction page: http://ls5443samplewiki.wikispaces.com/deconstruction_graphic_organizer.
  • Both members of the partnership will make notes on the wiki page to respond to each bullet on the deconstruction graphic organizer. Note: Each person must use a different color font to show her/his contributions to the shared graphic organizer. Include a key to show which color represents which partner's contribution. Both people must answer each question, except where there is only one possible answer.
  • Review the checklist and reflection criteria on Rubric 3.2.
  • Use the discussion feature on your wiki page to discuss your ideas.
  • Jointly complete the graphic organizer.
  • Compose your individual reflection.

Individual Reflection - Individual score (20 possible points)
